7 Top Reasons to Visit Clinton County in the Fall

Though we still have plenty of warm weather to enjoy, autumn will be here soon, and for many of us, it’ll be much sooner than we want. However, with the cooler temperatures come more reasons to visit Clinton County in the fall.

As exciting as that sounds, we can always come up with more spectacular things to do — some of which you may not realize happen right here within the county. So, buckle up, grab your planner, and get to it.

1. Embrace Autumn’s Colors in Clinton County

The best time to see that stunning burst of color is around the first week or two of October, but it doesn’t last long, so enjoy all the fun things to do this fall while you can. Several trails in the area make for a great hiking or biking adventure — don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the scenery!

Eldon Hazlet State Park has more than nine trails! Cherokee Trail is three miles long and has separate loops that pass through an oak-hickory grove and some fantastic lake views. If you take this trail, we suggest packing a picnic lunch to enjoy the scenery.

The Carlyle Lake area also has over nine trails to explore, and the biking trails span over 20 miles. So, grab your gear and make it a day trip because there’s plenty to see and do.

Of course, you might also bring your tent along and stay the night. If you love fishing, both recreational areas have plenty of fishing holes to explore. There are plenty of crappie, catfish, and bass, but go prepared. Don’t let the ‘big one’ get away from you or break the line.

2. Enjoy the Harvest at Local Farmers Markets

Whether you’re planning your canning schedule or just looking for farm-to-table meats, fresh produce, or a homemade treat, there’s a cornucopia waiting to tempt you. The orchards and farmers markets around the county are great places to get your produce.

Taphorn Orchard is one of our favorite places in Clinton County, Illinois. There are abundant apple varieties to consider. So, choose wisely, but if you change your mind later, you can always go back for more.

Farmers markets throughout the county are also great places for fresh produce, baked and canned goods, treats, and more. So, be sure to stop and check them out, too.

3. Discover Local History at Railroad Day

Clinton County also has a rich history, making it a great family day or field trip destination. Railroad Village displays a historic 2500 Engine and 9415 Caboose. You’ll also find a Republic F-105 Thunderchief on display, which offers a glimpse of the aircraft used during the Vietnam War.

4. Conquer the Rail Monster Crawl

Festivals also offer plenty of fun things to do this fall, and the Rail Monster Crawl, a block party in downtown Centralia, is sure to give you — or the whole family — a ghoulishly good time. So, be sure to save the date!

5. Taste the Season at the 20th Annual Chili Soup Cookoff

Some like it spicy hot, some like it cold, but we all want it from the pot during the Annual Chili or Soup Cookoff and Cupcake Wars in Clinton County, Illinois. There are a lot of great cooks out there, so don that apron and bring your best recipe.

Not a cook? That’s okay, too. Some of us prefer to hold a spoon instead of a ladle. If that sounds like you, come hungry and ready to sample the goods, but leave some room for the cupcakes.

6. Sip and Savor at a Local Winery

Autumn is also a great time to visit one of the local wineries and indulge in your choice of wine — reds or whites, dry or fruity. Each of our four local wineries offers something unique, from wine-tasting to elegant menus to live music events.
