The sign out front reads, “Food so good, you’ll think we stole your Grandma.” Fortunately, for diners who visit Good Ol Days Restaurant in New Baden, IL, the food backs it up. This is good, old-fashioned home cooking, and both locals and visitors love it.
The restaurant has a comfy feel, with old photos on the walls for atmosphere. Head to the upstairs room and you’ll see pictures of what the place looked like when it was the town butcher shop.
Just like grandma, the restaurant prides itself in making everything from scratch, including beef tips, daily soups and its savory gravy. Fried chicken is a specialty, and the most requested menu item. Wednesdays and Sundays, it’s the All-You-Can-Eat feature served with fluffy homemade biscuits. Barbeque ribs, pulled pork, fish (Tuesday is all-you-can eat white fish), burgers and more are also on the menu.
There’s a salad bar for starters, and for those who love a great dessert (count us in!), Good Ol Days makes some great pies. From scratch, of course. Yummy selections include generous slices of banana and coconut cream, and a delicious crumble-topped apple.
Breakfasts are equally popular here. Biscuits and gravy are a favorite, but so are the special deep-dish egg entrees, such as the hot casserole of eggs, sausage, country fries, gravy and melty cheese. Pastry fans will love the giant cinnamon rolls, baked fresh daily. Pancakes, omelets, hearty sandwiches and other morning standards are also available.
Come hungry, because the portions are generous!
